The psychiatric site

The site on which the museum stands is unique in the world. Many 19th-century psychiatric institutions, such as those in Münsingen, Zurich and Oregon, have been preserved. But nowhere else can one find, as here, buildings dating from earlier periods that are still standing and in use for psychiatric purposes.

For over 500 years, people have received medical care here, and for over 275 years, they have received psychiatric care and treatment. Thanks to the site’s generous space, each new extension has allowed the new building to be constructed alongside the old one.

The site was not given the name ‘Waldau’ until 1855, when the large main building was constructed. This name was intended to evoke tranquillity and nature, much like ‘Friedmatt’ in Basel or ‘Burghölzli’ in Zurich.

From 2027, the museum plans to offer guided tours and other activities on the site. We invite you to come and explore it now. It is open to the public.
